The E3 Triple Lip Seal and Y Wide Inner Ring Eccentric Lock

When it comes to dirt getting into bearings, the agriculture industry tops the chart. Whether you're plowing, harvesting, tilling or discing, the bearings in these applications experience some of the worst contamination possible. We all know that when the work begins, uptime is crucial, and nothing increases cost more than a piece of farm machinery that’s been sidelined during the peak season. 
That’s why you need a mounted ball bearing that can withstand the punishment of the most demanding workloads and conditions. Over time, several bearing options have proven themselves for their durability, reliability and ease of maintenance.
First up is the wide inner-ring designed eccentric lock ball bearing, such as our Link-Belt Y Series. The wide inner-ring design offers more shaft stability than its narrow inner-ring counterparts. And more shaft stability means more reliability.
The wide inner ring, combined with our proven eccentric-lock shaft locking mechanism, adds even more reliability because the eccentric lock is basically a locking collar with an eccentric cam machined into it. The wide "Y" inner ring has a matching eccentric cam. To lock the bearing to the shaft, rotate the eccentric collar around the cam of the inner ring (according to service instructions), and as the high points meet the collar, this action pinches the shaft to provide substantial shaft grip. One thing to remember is that the eccentric collar must be rotated in the direction of shaft rotation for it to work.  If you do not follow this procedure, chances are good the collar will come loose.
The eccentric lock will hold better than a setscrew lock because it does not rely on the setscrew to “bite” into the shaft.  Over time, setscrew bearings can loosen as the setscrews are consistently worked back and forth under load, which reduces the shaft bite.
Eccentric lock bearings do have set screws, but the setscrews are more of an anti-rotation device than a shaft locking device.  With a typical setscrew shaft locking bearing, the setscrews bite the shaft underneath the inner ring, creating burrs.  These burrs, which are difficult to remove, can make it challenging to remove the bearing from the shaft.  While the eccentric lock setscrews also bite the shaft, it occurs outside the inner ring, facilitating easy removal of the burrs.  With be burrs removed, the bearing can be slid off the shaft much easier.
Next, we’ll look at a triple-lip seal, such as our Link-Belt E3. Farming is a dirty business, and that’s why contamination is the most prevalent reason for bearing failure. Typical ball bearings have a single-lip seal, but with the Link-Belt Y series you can add the E3 triple-lip seal, which provides outstanding contamination prevention.
The bottom line? With two additional seal lips, you have additional contamination barriers, leading to increased uptime, better reliability and longer bearing life.  (See illustrations below.) 


Finally, let’s discuss a 90-degree lube fitting, which allows for easy access to bearing relubrication. It can be challenging to grease bearings on agricultural equipment. And though we all know bearings need regular lubrication to stand up to the high levels of contaminants, if lubrication is difficult, we’re not as likely to do it correctly or often enough.
It is important to purge contaminated grease and replace it with clean grease. The 90-degree lube fitting, in most cases, allows for easier access, and therefore, easier and quicker lubrication. 
Combining the Link-Belt eccentric lock wide inner-ring Y Series with the E3 triple-lip seal, the 90-degree lube fitting and good lubrication practices, you will extend your bearing life and reduce costly and frustrating downtime.
