Ring Gear Reconditioning Procedure
Ring gears are, of course, a considerable investment. That is why we offer gear reburbishment to potentially extend the useful life of your gears.
We work with you to determine if a reburbishment is possible. An experienced engineering team determines the actual amount of material the gear has between the existing roots and the outside rim and make an edge template of two or three worn gears. This analysis also assists in directing the exact customized reconditioning procedure that will be followed to restore your gear.
The reconditioning process starts with a shot blast to clean the gear followed by a measurement of rim thickness and visual inspection. We follow that with a 100% magnetic particle inspection.
If we find any cracks or defects, we repair weld them if possible. Furnace stress relief is used if the weld repair is extensive. Our team re-machines the gear split flanges if necessary and re-assembles the gear with new split bolts and oversized alignment sleeves. We then re-machine the blank including the bore, counterbore, top OD, skin cut edge rim and mounting flange faces. Finally, we re-cut the teeth.
Since most companies would not want to shut down during this procedure, we recommend that you first replace the existing gear with a new ring gear while the original is refurbished. This allows you to use the refurbished gear as an eventual replacement.
